Don’t Give Your Teenager a Ferrari (And Other Lessons About AI Costs)

AI has a real cost. Think about it like this: you wouldn’t give your teenage daughter a Ferrari as her first car. You’d probably start her with a Honda Civic or something similar—safe, reliable, and not financially devastating if it gets totaled.
The same mindset should apply to AI agents.
The Hidden Costs of AI
Tools like Anthropic, Cursor, and other AI platforms make it incredibly easy to sign up for any plan. The onboarding is smooth, the interface is friendly, and it all feels low-friction.
But behind that convenience, there are overages—and those are real costs.
Loops Within Loops
When you’re using AI for coding, it’s important to understand what’s actually happening under the hood. There are loops within loops, processes calling other processes, and each of those operations can translate into usage—and therefore into money.
If you don’t understand how those loops run, you can end up with a surprisingly high bill.
Start Safe, Then Scale
So treat AI like that first car: start with something safe and manageable. Understand your usage, your loops, and your limits before you “upgrade” to the Ferrari-level plans.
Be intentional. Be cautious.
Be safe out there.
